As the more than life-size toy soldiers marched in place in the lower level between NorthPark’s Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom last night, the Mustang Manufacturing Company Traditional Nylon Halter crowd including WOKC Founder Cindy Brinker Simmons nearby, Guild President-Elect Connie Yates, her sister Marilyn Ellis, Tammy Harkins, Mary Dowling, Karee Sampson, Regina Bruce, Carla Russo, WOKC Board Chair John Dankovchik and WOKC CEO Aashik Khakoo were checking out the exhibition of Warrior Portraits.
The towers with portraits of children battling cancer were true shopper stoppers as folks read about the youngsters who have been valiant “warriors” in the battle again cancer.
Highlighting the debut of the exhibition was the presentation of checks in the NM Zodiac Room from WOKC to support the following institutions and experts in the battle against pediatric cancer:

- Children’s Medical Center Foundation: $25,000: Matthew Campbell, MD, and Kenneth Chen, MD
- Children’s Medical Center Foundation: $75,000: Kathryn Dickerson, MD
- Cook Children’s Health Foundation: $12,500: Meaghan Granger, MD, and Holly Pacenta, MD
- UT Southwestern Medical Center: $70,000: Shaheen Khan, Ph.D.
- UT Southwestern Medical Center: $56,250: Andrew Y. Koh, MD
- UT Southwestern Medical Center: $68,226: Kiran Kumar, MD
- Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center: $100,000: Soheil Meshinchi, MD, Ph.D.

The exhibition will be in place for free viewing through Sunday, November 21.
2021 Crystal Charity Ball Meets Its Goal For Dallas County Children’s Non-Profits With A Celebration
Yipes! 2021 Crystal Charity Ball Chair Leslie Diers and her committee of 99 women plus her “advisor” mom/former CCB-er Cynthia Melnick have a doozy of a double win. First, they’ve totally met their goal of $5,391,091 for the following 2021 Dallas County children’s non-profits:
- Baylor Scott And White Dallas Foundation – $936,831 for three years for Tiniest Texans
- Cafe Momentum – $506,625 for three years supporting Cafe Momentum’s Internship Program COVID-19
- Dallas CASA – $396,000 for advocacy for Teens in Protective Care
- Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center – $1,000,000 for DCAC Core Program
- Dallas Symphony Association Inc. – $750,000 for three years of its Southern Dallas Residency Youth Education
- Network of Community Ministries – $926,625 for three years for Fortifying Network’s Impact on Children’s Food Insecurity Mobile Pantry and Educator-focused Approach
- Phoenix House of Texas Inc. – $375,000 for three years for Substance Use and Mental Health Treatment Service
- Texas Scottish Rite Hospital of Dallas – $500,000 for Boundless Centennial Campaign’s Day Surgery Renovation
Second, they have managed to have a place-at-the-table at the black-tie gala celebration for the sponsors, underwriting and beneficiaries on Saturday, December 4, at the Hilton Anatole.
It’s that time of year when area non-profits are making holiday pleas for support. The annual MySweetWishList series is returning thanks to an anonymous underwriter to help you rally the community by getting your message(s) out to both old and new supporters.
Because Thanksgiving is just around the corner, we’ll start the series Monday, November 22, and finish up on Tuesday, December 24. It’s absolutely simple and free to be part of the MySweetWishList. All you have to do is provide the following:
- a first-person article in Word format describing the one wish the organization would love to have granted during the upcoming holidays. Example: Let’s say your organization is having a raffle to be held next spring. Then the wish might be for folks to buy raffle tickets as gifts for friends. Or, perhaps a homeless organization wishes for the donation of blankets and coats.
- the author must be a nonprofit’s representative, preferably a volunteer
- a photo of the author and/or organization’s logo in JPEG format
- the nonprofit’s website
- the contact information for readers to respond
- only one wish per nonprofit.
- When you submit the article and photo to [email protected], please put the “MySweetWishList for [the organization’s name]” (Example: MySweetWishList for Cellphone Addicts Society) in the subject line. If you don’t, the infamous MySweetCharity filters will probably send your submission into the great unknown.
And, yup, you guessed it — we’ll need your submissions ASAP. It’ll be first come, first posted.
Not only will you help your organization(s), you’ll impress your clients/boss that you’re still hard at work for them!

“For more than 30 years, The Warren Center has hosted hundreds of children with developmental delays and disabilities at the annual Operation Santa holiday event, where gifts from our annual toy drive are distributed in a fun, safe and sensory-friendly atmosphere. The pandemic has presented many unique challenges for North Texans, including the families we serve, of which at least 50 percent live beneath Texas’ poverty line. “At The Warren Center, we provide therapy and support for over 3,000 families every year. Each day, the need for services continues to grow. The CDC estimates one in six children have intellectual or physical disabilities or delays. In Dallas County alone, over 102,000 children have a developmental disability. The period between birth to five years is a time of rapid development. The earliest possible intervention is critical due to the accelerated brain development during these first years of life. Early childhood intervention programs have been shown to yield benefits in academic achievement, behavior, educational progression and attainment, and labor market success. Before the pandemic, our staff traveled to 48 zip codes and more than 900 homes each week to serve children in need. Our offices also served more than 200 children on-site for clinic-based services. Providing physical therapy, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and social support is essential to help children with disabilities reach their full potential.”

It was in 1971 that four prominent community volunteers — Annette Strauss, Mitch Jericho, Jan Sanders and Helen Boothman — recognized the power of and need for volunteers and started a grassroots program called SERV (Special Effort to Recruit Volunteers). They set up shop in an office in downtown Dallas. Over the years the organization’s success required moving to the Wilson Historic District and eventually to a two-story building on Live Oak, as well as a few name changes — Dallas Voluntary Action Center, Volunteer Center of Dallas County, the Volunteer Center of North Texas and, eventually, today’s VolunteerNow.
In the early days, connections were made “through call logs, landlines and a printed directory.”
As Jan recalled, “her top priority in recruitment was to get the volunteer to the agency as quickly as possible and not to let their enthusiasm slip away.”
Thanks to the advent of the worldwide web and high technology, that priority has been ramped up exponentially. As a result, eight years ago the group’s VOLY.org was created to serve as a 24/7 “web-based volunteer recruiting, management, reporting and matching platform.” The timing couldn’t have been better planned. With COVID-19 creating a monumental need for volunteers and many available out-of-work people, VOLY.org was the ideal connector.
To share this wealth of resources, VolunteerNow CEO Tammy Richards is hoping to spread the software platform to other volunteer entities through its 50th anniversary capital campaign.
Luckily for Tammy, longtime volunteer and philanthropist Lyda Hill has stepped up to the plate to help her achieve that goal.
To celebrate VolunteerNow’s 50th anniversary, Lyda Hill Philanthropies has provided a $250,000 match challenge to enhance VOLY.org’s platform.
According to Tammy, “Through this generous grant from Lyda Hill Philanthropies, we will celebrate VolunteerNow’s 50th anniversary milestone by continuing to upgrade and extend our reach to the organizations who need volunteers most.”
This challenge by Lyda fits into her belief that “‘science is the answer’ to many of life’s most challenging issues.”
As Lyda explained, “It is an honor to support VolunteerNow as it celebrates its history and prepares for its future with critical technology and infrastructure investments.”
